The Gallery Cafe, Basseterre, St. Kitts

After a visit to the farmer’s market and a tour with Chef Miles Thompson from Christophe Harbour, we circumnavigated the island before ending our morning at Independence Square for what was supposed to be a light brunch at The Gallery Cafe. I say “supposed to be” because once we got a glimpse of her flourless Chocolate Valentino in the fridge, all bets were off.

Peanut butter iced latte

The cafe is celebrating its second anniversary and is a collaboration between Leah Cameron-Blake and her mum, Rosie Cameron. Rosie’s colorful Caribbean landscapes and portraits hang on the walls and Leah is the baker and chef behind some wickedly good pastries, desserts and iced coffees. Try the coconut milk iced latte or peanut butter latte on a humid day and you’ll be in heaven. Or mix Leah’s homemade chocolate syrup with peanut butter for a decadent Reese’s-inspired dessert drink.

Leah makes her own bagels and gets the smoked wahoo from a friend, who catches the fish and smokes them himself. This is her signature brunch dish and one of the only savory options. All her juices are fresh pressed and the menu is short and sweet. At a place where everything is delicious, made with love and served on cute vintage china plates, that’s probably a good thing since it makes ordering a little bit easier.
